Antimony
Antimony is a silvery-white, brittle metalloid. Its chemical symbol Sb is derived from the Latin name stibium. In nature it occurs mainly in minerals such as stibnite rather than as a native element.
Antimony compounds are used in flame-retardant systems, specialty glass, ceramics and semiconductor materials. Metallic antimony is added to lead and other alloys to improve hardness and wear resistance, including in certain battery and technical applications.
The most important ore is stibnite, an antimony sulfide. Concentrates are processed by roasting, reduction or hydrometallurgical methods, depending on the ore and the required purity. Recycling is possible from lead alloys and selected industrial residues.
Antimony and many of its compounds require controlled handling. Dust and fumes should be avoided, and occupational exposure limits, ventilation and suitable personal protective equipment must be observed.
